The Congressional District 1 seat in Nebraska became vacant when Congressman Fortenberry resigned the seat on March 31st following a federal jury convicting him of campaign finance violations. When such a vacancy occurs, a special election is held to fill the remainder of the term which expires in January of 2023. Under Nebraska law, both political parties nominate their respective candidate who will vie for the seat in the Special Election. Governor Ricketts announced that the special election will occur on June 28th. The Primary Election will be held on May 10th and the General Election will be on November 8th.

There will be a Primary Election in May and the General Election in November since House of Representatives seats are up every two years on even numbered years. The two political parties chose their front runners to also be their nominees for the Special Election. State Senator Patty Pansing-Brooks of Lincoln and State Senator Mike Flood of Norfolk will go head-to-head in the Special Election. It’s likely that voters in District 1 will see them go head-to-head again in November to serve in the 118th Congress.
