The more than thirty advocates joined the Nebraska Credit Union League in visits with Nebraska’s Congressional Delegation that focused on the credit union difference, the federal tax exemption, the Fed’s Regulation II proposed rule, the Credit Card Competition Act, so-called “junk fees”, overdraft protection, and affordable workforce housing. While in Washington D.C., Senator Deb Fischer signed as a co-sponsor of S. 610, the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, which provides meeting flexibility to credit union boards of directors. Senator Pete Ricketts previously became a co-sponsor and all three House members voted in favor of the House’s companion bill passage in January of 2023.

A credit union priority on the House side is opposing the proposed rule of Regulation II by the Federal Reserve Board of Governors that reduces debit card interchange fees. The League sought co-signers of a congressional letter to the Fed and co-sponsors of a newly introduced bill H.R. 7531, the Secure Payments Act, which requires the Fed to stop and study how their proposal would impact small financial institutions and lower income communities. At the request of our advocacy efforts, Congressman Mike Flood, who serves on the House Financial Services Committee, co-signed the letter and signed to be a co-sponsor of the bill.

America’s Credit Unions Government Affairs Conference (GAC) was held from March 3-7th in Washington D.C. There were more than 6,000 credit union professionals and volunteers from across the country for the first GAC post CUNA and NAFCU merger. The League hosted several events for Nebraska credit union advocates including its Welcome Reception, Nebraska Hill Staff Reception, and the Advocates Dinner.

Nebraska credit union advocates visit with
Congressman Mike Flood (NE-1) and his staff.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”3px|||||”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.4″ _module_preset=”default”] Credit union advocates from across Nebraska hiked Capitol Hill to bring a focus to the legislative and regulatory agenda of credit unions.
