U.S. Senator Ben Sasse announced his plans to resign from the Senate to take the position of President at the University of Florida. The first report of his expected resignation came on October 6th. Senator Sasse is expected to be approved by the Board of Governors of the University of Florida to be its next President. Senator Sasse has indicated that it is his expectation that he will resign his seat in late November and that the resignation would take effect in late December of this year. \u201cThe Nebraska Credit Union League thanks Senator Sasse for his years of dedicated service in the U.S. Senate and for his strong support of Nebraska\u2019s credit unions, their employees, and members. Senator Sasse co-introduced S. 1767, the Credit Union Employee and Member Safety Act, on behalf of Nebraska\u2019s credit unions and the bill became law earlier this year,\u201d said League CEO Scott Sullivan.<\/p>\n
Under Nebraska law, the Governor would appoint a person to fill the vacated seat until a special election could be held in 2024. Governor Ricketts has indicated that depending on the timing of the vacancy, he or the next Governor would appoint Senator Sasse\u2019s successor. Governor Ricketts is term-limited and will serve out the remainder of this year and the person elected in the Gubernatorial race this November will take office in January 2023. Republican Jim Pillen and Democrat Carol Blood are vying to be Nebraska\u2019s next Governor.<\/p>\n
