I Crashed the GAC!

by Matt Hill, Creighton FCU

I was fortunate enough to be selected as the young professional from the state of Nebraska to “Crash” the GAC last month.  The Nebraska Credit Union League, along with the Cooperative Trust and the Filene Institute, sent one young professional from each state to “Crash” and experience the GAC.  As a part of the Crashers, I was able to take more out of the experience than I ever anticipated.  Without going into details about the amazing people I met as part of the Crasher group, the experience was focused on keeping young professionals active and engage in the Credit Union movement.  We are fortunate that we have many young, talented, and smart employees within the credit unions, but how do we keep them involved?  Do they know the mission and value that comes with working for and advocating for credit unions?  One of my biggest take away from the week was that my passion for credit unions was given an adrenalin shot.  There are so many challenges we face from legislation to the banks that we need to keep our employees educated and passionate about the CU difference.  But we also need to keep our young professionals engaged and active. {Read The Full Article}

Filene Study Shows Surprising Results About What Makes A Successful Credit Union CEO

Hiring and developing a successful credit union CEO can’t be reduced to a formula. But the surprising results of a recent Filene Research Institute study could help guide your credit union in the right direction its next CEO search.

At the very least, Filene’s 2013 research report, “Leading for Credit Union Success: The Roles of Personality and Practices in CEOs,” could eliminate some common misconceptions about the most important personality traits and leadership skills for a CEO to have.

Report author Murray Barrick, PhD, of Texas A&M University, says he was surprised how often personality traits seemed better predictors of credit union success, often more important than leadership skills or high-productivity work practices. {Read The Full Article}

Basel III Liquidity Changes Will Help CUs Maintain Access to Bank Services and CD Yields

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has proposed changes to its Basel III liquidity rules to help credit unions in the United States and around the world maintain access to bank services as well as favorable yields on bank certificates of deposit.

World Council of Credit Unions advocated for the proposed changes to the Basel III “Net Stable Funding Ratio” (NSFR), Basel III’s medium-term liquidity metric. Under the current version of the Basel III NSFR, credit unions’ term deposits in banks are classified as “wholesale funding,” which assumes that 0% of these deposits would be “available” to the bank during periods of economic stress because of withdrawals.

The new Basel Committee proposal would change the NSFR’s 0% availability to 50% availability for bank term deposits made by credit unions of any asset size. {Read The Full Article}

Dot Credit Union to become a Reality

A new Internet domain name just for credit unions, .creditunion (dot credit union), is just about a reality.

The Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) has notified CUNA that the domain name has been approved—and there are just a few more steps to take before it becomes available for credit unions’ use.

Back in 2011, ICANN announced it would significantly broaden the number of approved top-level domain names beyond the limited number in use, such as .com, .org, .gov, .edu, and .coop. CUNA submitted a .creditunion application on behalf of the credit union movement. {Read The Full Article}

CUNA Launches National Search for New Leadership

A national search for a new president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) will be launched immediately, the association’s chairman said, to find a successor to Bill Cheney, who is returning to California in June to be president and CEO of SchoolsFirst FCU in Santa Ana. CUNA Chairman Dennis Pierce said the search would consider candidates from both inside and outside of the credit union movement.

“We will be looking for leadership that can bring to bear the talents of the exceptional team that we have on board at CUNA now, and leverage the strengths of the three-tiered system of CUNA, Leagues and credit unions to achieve our goals and strengthen the movement,” Pierce said. {Read The Full Article}
