Western Heritage CU earns Biz Kid$ Education Grant

This grant objective is to develop a financial literacy program for youth in middle and high schools throughout the panhandle of Nebraska.  The credit union will partner with ten schools and will provide Biz Kid$ materials and in-class presentations or activities on a monthly basis.  They will also partner with area high schools through their FBLA, DECA, and/or other business groups to provide guidance and support to high school kids to go into the middle schools and begin teaching Biz Kid$ modules to the students.  The unique wrap around program will enforce a deeper understanding of financial literacy among high school youth by providing opportunities for them to teach younger peers in the middle schools in the area by utilizing Biz Kid$ materials. {Read The Full Article}

The Illinois Credit Union League Service Corp. (LSC) Enhances Debit Prepaid Product Line

Through its prepaid program, LSC provides gift cards, TravelMoney and general purpose prepaid products to more than 2,000 credit unions in 48 states.

Among the upgrades is the availability of more card designs. More than 60 options are offered, an increase from 13 previously. A new option offers the products in a greeting card format, customizable for different occasions. Liberty First CU Wins CU4Kids Outstanding Achievement Award

The Credit Unions for Kids Outstanding Achievement Award is the highest individual honor that can be bestowed upon a credit union in Nebraska in recognition of their involvement in Credit Unions for Kids fundraising.

Liberty First CU has been a major supporter for Credit Unions for Kids.  They raised $.37 per member for Children’s Hospital and Medical Center through fundraisers in their credit union which included raffles, Miracle Jeans Day, grocery bag sales, holiday skip a payment, Easter egg sales, Santa Letters and a sand volleyball tournament.  This credit union participates at and sponsors every Children’s Carnival, sponsors the phone lines at the yearly 96 KIXX radiothon, as well as sponsors and participates in the CMN golf outings.   They did an exceptional job promoting CU4 Kids through posters, donor letters, their website, email marketing, newsletter articles, and on their facebook page. {Read The Full Article}

Your Left-Behind 401(k): Avoid These Two Common Mistakes

If you have a 401(k) account still being administrated by a former employer, avoid two common—and potentially very costly—mistakes people make in this situation: cashing out the account early or ignoring the account.

Mistake #1: Early Cash-outs—The Wealth Killer 

It’s easy to see the downside of cashing out a 401(k) before age 59½. Start with a 10% penalty off the top. This is how the IRS discourages lump-sum distributions for purposes other than retirement. How many deductions from your hard-earned paychecks did it take to build up that 10%?

Also, by cashing out early you’ll pay income tax based on your current tax bracket, which may be considerably higher than if you’d waited until retirement. Employers must withhold 20 percent of the distribution amount to cover anticipated income tax. {Read The Full Article}
