League Hike’s the Hill

On September 11th and 12th, League staff traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in a national fly-in organized by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) to push for an increase in the cap on credit union business lending.  Leagues’ from across the country coordinated efforts on Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to pass legislation (H.R. 1428, S.2231 ) which would allow the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to raise the cap on small business lending for credit unions which is currently 12.25% of total assets.

The legislation contains stipulations that require credit unions seeking an increase to have been making member business loans for at least 5 years, have a strong track record of safe business lending, and have reached 80% of the current cap within the previous four quarters.  CUNA held a press conference on Capitol Hill where the leading sponsors of both the Senate and House bills spoke and urged Congress to act on the matter.  Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO) and Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) introduced the respective bills.  Also in attendance were multiple outside interest groups that support increasing the cap.

“Congress has the opportunity to make more capital available to small businesses in a way that doesn’t cost the taxpayers a dime and doesn’t increase the size of government” said League President/CEO Scot Sullivan.  “This is common sense legislation that needs to be passed so that small businesses have more options when trying to access capital so that they can start or grow their businesses,” said Sullivan.

CUNA estimates that passing legislation would free up more than $13 billion in capital and create over 140,000 jobs within the first year of passage.

Project Zip Code Helps Grassroots Efforts

Credit unions that use CUNA’s Project Zip Code know which congressional and state legislative districts and counties their members live in without compromising their members’ privacy.

“Credit unions are always growing, districts are changing, and members are moving across the county – or the country, even though they keep their credit union membership,” explained CUNA SVP, Political Affairs Richard Gose.

In addition to the mobility of credit union members, the changing of legislative districts for the upcoming election is a concern of many credit unions.  As new district maps are approved, credit unions that have run the latest version of Project Zip Code (version 12.0) will automatically have their members matched to the current and new legislative districts.  This will give credit unions a great advantage as we talk to new legislators and candidates about the credit union difference. {Read The Full Article}
