In fact, researchers at the University of Arizona documented a “snowball effect” that these early efforts exponentially increase the likelihood that students will pursue more financial education as time goes on, including informal learning through books, magazines and seminars. {Read The Full Article}

Nebraska CU Movement Mourns the Loss of Two Long-time Volunteers

Tom Maly passed away on July 29, 2011, after a courageous battle with a stroke. Tom was an active member at Roberts Dairy Credit Union since April of 1973. He had served on the Credit Committee, and also as Vice President and President. Tom was very instrumental with preparing Roberts Dairy for the twenty first century.

He helped the credit union implement new products and services such as share draft accounts, Second Mortgages, IRA accounts, and developing a Web site.  According to Russell Konecny, Manager Roberts Dairy CU, “Tom was the true definition of the credit union movement, of people helping people, and will be greatly missed by our Credit Union.”

Retired Chairman John Lehotyak has passed away on September 5, 2001. John was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1995 and served as Chairman from 1996-2009.  According to Credit Union President/CEO, Mary Johnson, “John was a forward thinker and a true leader.  Our new logo to go along with our TIP charter was his idea.”

Helping people was John Lehotyak’s calling.  His 33 years with the Omaha Police Department taught him that victims often need help and an advocate. When he retired from the department in 1997, he became director of Douglas County Victim Assistance. He retired from that post in 2009.

Lehotyak also was instrumental in starting Project Harmony.

IRS Contacting Individual Credit Unions Regarding Tax Exemption

Credit unions in a number of states have received letters from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stating that they are no longer tax exempt. Most of these letters are directed to state-chartered credit unions whose Form 990s were at one time filed as group returns by state regulators (both Oregon and Washington state regulators filed group 990s at one time). Most state regulators stopped providing this service years ago; this has apparently caused the IRS to conclude that the credit unions in the groups have failed to file their Form 990s for three or more years, which, by law, would require the automatic revocation of their tax exemptions. {Read The Full Article}
